Maryland judiciary background check registration#
Background checks are required for most handgun transactions, including private sales, permitting, and registration with the police. Maryland already has tough gun laws, but officials complain that illegal guns are easy to get in other states that don’t have such restrictions and therefore supply the demand of criminals. While this number pales in comparison to the number from Chicago and New York, both of those cities have similar mandatory minimum sentences for illegal gun possession that are tougher than Baltimore’s proposed statute. Law enforcement reported seizing 1,800 illegal guns in Baltimore in 2015. Maryland ended a program in 2013 that required lawful owners to submit ballistic examples because the program was expensive and ineffective. Concealed carry permits are may-issue, and are difficult to obtain. Maryland bans the sale of military-looking firearms and has an extensive list of banned handguns. Permits are required to purchase handguns, and handguns must be registered. Maryland heavily restricts access to firearms in the state.
